Senator Hueso Reacts to Report from Governor Newsom’s Wildfire Strike Force

April 12, 2019

San Diego, CA – April 12, 2019 – In response to the report entitled “Wildfires and Climate Change: California’s Energy Future” released today by Governor Gavin Newsom, Senator Ben Hueso (D-San Diego), Chair of the Senate Energy, Utilities and Communications Committee, issued the following statement:

“I thank Gov. Newsom for his engaged leadership as we explore policies to reduce wildfire risks and make California more resilient in the face of climate change.

"The myriad issues related to addressing damages from wildfires, the liabilities thereof and the financial risks of the utilities necessitate urgent, and potentially some unpopular, actions.

"First and foremost, we must continue to focus on ensuring wildfire victims are treated fairly, minimizing impacts on ratepayers, and making sure all parties contribute towards the solutions.

"As legislators, we must respond in a deliberative but expeditious manner. The urgency of the matter makes it all the more important that we continue to have engaged leadership from the Governor and his Administration as we assess which recommendations may need to be prioritized.”
