Senator Ben Hueso

Dear Friend,

In recognition of National Autism Awareness Month, I introduced Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 125, designating April as Autism Awareness Month. It's important for all Californians to show their support for autism awareness.

Last month was also a very exciting time in the State Legislature, involving lots of policy hearings and committee approvals of bills before a key deadline. I'm happy to report that all of the bills I am moving forward this session passed their respective policy committees. You can learn more about these legislative proposals on my website, or by contacting my offices.

If there is anything you would like to share with us, or if we can assist with something, please let me or my staff know. We are here to help!

Yours very truly,

Ben Hueso
State Senator
40th District

Select Committee on California-Mexico Cooperation

I have the distinct pleasure of serving as Chair of the Select Committee on California-Mexico Cooperation. We recently held two informational hearings during which officials from California and Mexico had in-depth discussions about issues of binational concern and how to address them using collaborative efforts.

In April, the Select Committee hearing topic was "Improving Public Health in the Border Region." Held in Imperial, this hearing involved discussions between elected officials, government agencies and other stakeholders, focusing on public health concerns in the border region.

On May 8, we held a hearing titled "The Students We Share: A Discussion on Expanding Educational Opportunities for Trans-border Students." The hearing involved a discussion between officials from Mexico and California regarding the growing challenges (e.g., language barriers, cultural differences and education system disparities) faced by U.S.-born students who attend school on both sides of the US-Mexico border at different times during their educational experience.

Parks Now "Rising Star Award"

I'm honored to have received the "Rising Star Award" from the Parks Now Coalition for my continued support of parks and open spaces in California. Parks Now is an organization composed of experts, activists and community leaders from across California who advocate for improving our park system. As an outdoors enthusiast, I know how valuable California's public parks are, and I will continue to support them through my work in the Legislature. Thank you, Parks Now, for this honor!

40th District Mothers of the Year Celebration

In celebration of Mother's Day and in honor of the amazing women in our district who make a positive difference by supporting, mentoring, and loving children and families, I hosted a "40th District Mothers of the Year" celebration on May 11 in National City. Constituents were asked to submit nominations for women who deserve recognition for their contributions toward a brighter future for the children of our community. Twenty-one nominees were selected to be recognized at the celebration. Please join me in thanking all of the incredible mothers and women in our district!

Citizen of the Month: Michelle Krug

Michelle Krug is a truly remarkable member of our community who I am honored to call my friend. She has been involved in activism in San Diego for nearly forty years, and is a dynamic role model for all people who believe in our obligation to improve the quality of life for future generations. Michelle is genuinely respected, admired, and appreciated by all who have had the opportunity to know and work with her, and to reap the benefits of her exceptional legacy of community involvement and civic concern. In tribute to her exemplary record of community service, Michelle has been designated by an official Senate Resolution as 40th District Volunteer of the Year. Thank you, Michelle, for your endless contributions to our community!

Please join me in congratulating Pioneers Memorial Health District on the recent opening of their new Children's Health Center! Pioneers contributes greatly to our community by providing quality and compassionate healthcare services for families in Imperial Valley. I am happy to see them continue to grow and expand their impact in our district.

The new Pioneers Children's Health Center is located in the heart of the City of Brawley and provides expanded access to pediatric care in the region. The center is staffed by full-time physicians and provides pediatric services including checkups and vaccines.

Text to Table: Free Summer Meals for Kids and Teens

Summer vacation can be a stressful time for the 1 in 5 kids in California who struggle with hunger, many of whom rely on school breakfast and lunch for their nutrition during the school year. The good news is that there are federally-funded Summer Food Service Program locations all around the state that provide FREE meals for kids and teens age 18 and under, and offer a fun, safe place for them to be active and visit with friends.

To help people find summer meals sites in their community, the national anti-hunger campaign No Kid Hungry has created a texting line: Just text "FOOD" or "COMIDA" to 877-877 from a mobile phone to automatically receive information about the closest summer meal locations.

If you or someone you know has kids who could benefit from these free summer meals, call the National Hunger Clearinghouse hotline (1-866-3-HUNGRY; 1-877-8- HAMBRE) for more information. A list of the California Department of Education's summer meal sites can also be found online at
