Senator Ben Hueso

Dear Friend,

Happy holidays! This month was full of celebrations - from Día de los Muertos to Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, the start of Hanukkah and more. November is also Native American Heritage Month, a tribute to the endless contributions of Native Americans to the establishment and growth of the United States.

My colleagues in the Legislature and I continue to work on our legislative packages for the 2022 session that begins in January. If you have ideas for new California laws, or changes to existing ones, please call or email my staff. We would love to hear your proposals for how to improve our state.

U.S.-Mexico Border Reopens to Non-Essential Travel

November 8th marked the end of travel restrictions that have impacted overland entry from Mexico since March 2020. This means the border is now open to non-essential travel. Inbound non-US-citizen travelers must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 and provide related proof of vaccination. Please click here for more information from the US Department of Homeland Security.

The pandemic has had an especially devastating impact on the border region. As we celebrate the reopening, we must also commit to making new investments to rebound our shared economy.

Brawley Union High School District Acquires Army National Guard Armory

Following many years of advocacy, the Brawley Union High School District has acquired the Army National Guard armory building in Brawley. We have been working for many years to support BUHSD in their ongoing efforts to expand their services and programming, and are thrilled to finally be celebrating this long-sought-after acquisition.

$1 Million State Budget Allocation for Imperial County Public Library System

This month, I met with the County of Imperial to discuss the $1 million state budget allocation we secured this year for the Imperial County public library system. This funding will increase access to much-needed library materials, digital resources, and Internet for Imperial Valley residents.

Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaways

Every year, my office helps coordinate events to provide Thanksgiving meals for our District 40 neighbors in need. This year, we gave out more than 300 turkeys, vouchers and fixings in San Diego and Imperial counties, thanks to the generosity and support of community partners like Catholic Charities Diocese of San Diego, Northgate Market, San Ysidro School District, Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, Community Resource Center at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, California American Water, PepsiCo, and General Motors.

Citizen of the Month: Patricia Chavez

Patty Chavez is a talented communicator and fierce advocate for underserved populations in the San Diego region and beyond. She currently serves as Policy Director for the Parent Institute for Quality Education (PIQE), where she supports the organization's vision and mission to champion equitable educational opportunities and create sustainable impacts. Before joining the PIQE team, Patty worked for South Bay Community Services, where she led the communications and external affairs efforts, expanding the organization's community reach and impact. In 2005, Patty was unanimously appointed by the City of Chula Vista Mayor and City Council to fill a vacant city council seat for a year where, among other things, she oversaw the "Safe Streets Plan" addressing traffic calming needs on busy streets.

´╗┐Patty resides in Chula Vista with her husband of 27 years, and together they raised three children. She is first-generation and first-in-family to earn advanced degrees, including a bachelor's degree from San Diego State University and a master's degree from the University of Southern California. Patty is also a graduate of Hispanas Organized for Political Equity (HOPE) Leadership Institute.

´╗┐Throughout the years, Patty has been a continuous supporter of our office's efforts to reach underserved communities, and we know we can count on her to do everything in her power to help the residents of the 40th Senate District. We are very appreciative of people like Patty who go above and beyond in their jobs, and who use their immense talents for the public good.

Organization of the Month: La Chula Crew

In 2017, a small group of women founded La Chula Crew with the goal of bettering their communities by "uplifting the locals with positivity and support, helping promote small businesses, empowering individuals, giving back to their communities, and rounding up others who want to do the same." To this end, the non-profit organization hosts weekly food distributions for low-income communities; operates community fridges; offers weekly alternative therapy classes for pregnant and parenting teens; and conducts monthly outreach events downtown where team members distribute food, hygiene kits, clothing, and support for unsheltered folks.

La Chula Crew also hosts a monthly support group for anyone to share, receive support and support others; quarterly toy drives for children in low-income areas (the next one is coming up on December 11th); and other community events such as this month's youth art gallery show, a fundraiser to support art programs for kids with Sparrow Academy and Arte Itxs.

La Chula Crew has supported and empowered countless individuals in our South Bay community, and we are very grateful for their generous and selfless work.
