WELCOME

Dear Friend,

As 2021 draws to a close, I reflect proudly on all we accomplished in the State Legislature this year. From pandemic response to economic recovery to fighting climate change, California continues to lead the nation in transformative and progressive policies. The new legislative session begins on January 3, 2022 and I am excited to be heading back to Sacramento for my final year in the State Senate. I am preparing to introduce a robust legislative package focused on education, clean energy, issues of binational concern and more. If you have ideas for new California laws, or changes to existing ones, please give us a call or send a message. We welcome and encourage your proposals for how our state can better serve its residents.

Sincerely,

Ben Hueso
State Senator
40th District

IN THE KNOW ...

San Diego for Every Child's Guaranteed Income Program

This month,I joined community partners to announce the initial rollout of San Diego for Every Child's new guaranteed income pilot program in San Diego and National City. The program will select 150 families of color with at least one child under the age of 12 to receive $500 cash payments for 24 months that can be spent on needs such as food, repairing a car to get to work, medicine or rent. Guaranteed income programs can dramatically improve families' well-being, and are an important step in addressing some of our country's economic and social challenges. I'm thrilled to have helped secure $1.4 million from this year's state budget to jumpstart the initiative.

Beyer Park: New State Park in San Ysidro

This month, $8.5 million in state funding was announced for construction of Beyer Park, the first new public park in San Ysidro in more than 25 years. The site will offer a clean, safe and accessible 13-acre outdoor space for residents and community groups to congregate, exercise, and relax. This is wonderful news for our South Bay community. Ensuring equitable access to parks and green spaces is a critical step in promoting environmental justice.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT ...

40th Senate District Veteran of the Year 2021

Congratulations to William "Bill" Glover, our 40th Senate District Veteran of the Year for 2021. At the ripe, young age of 86, Bill, a 100-percent service-connected disabled veteran, finds himself still helping other veterans every day. As CEO of The Consolidated Rehab Group, Inc., a corporation built around helping veterans transition from active duty to pursuing their dreams in the civilian world, Mr. Glover oversees and administrates a workforce composed of 15-to 20-percent veterans under contracts with the Veteran's Administration. Read more on my website.

Thank you to all who took the time to nominate community members for our Veteran of the Year award. We received many excellent nominations and enjoyed learning about each person. Picking just one winner was difficult, but we feel that Mr. Glover is a fantastic representative of our district.

Citizen of the Month: Lori Robinson

After 35 years working with the San Diego Regional Center, Lori Robinson is set to retire. Most recently serving as Regional Manager for the Imperial Valley office, Lori has dedicated her career to helping individuals with developmental disabilities. For over three decades, she worked to secure better resources and support for her constituents –everything from advocating for more group homes and affordable housing to starting a bereavement group to provide emotional and mental support for those dealing with death. She has been a beacon of hope in the Valley, and we are very grateful for all her efforts. Congratulations and best wishes to Lori on her well-earned retirement.

WHAT'S NEW ...

Statewide Indoor Mask Requirement through Jan.15, 2022

This month, state public health officials announced a new statewide indoor mask requirement through January 15 due to a concerning increase in covid-19 cases. This proactive measure is critical to ensure the rise in transmission doesn't overwhelm our hospitals. If you have questions, please visit covid19.ca.gov.
