WELCOME

Dear Friend,

Great things are happening in our district. Momentum around clean energy has greatly ramped up talk of lithium production in Imperial County, and its potential to make our state and country a leading-producer of ion-lithium batteries. I am continuing to work with my colleagues in the Legislature and Newsom Administration on ways to maximize this opportunity.

Meanwhile in the Legislature, we continue to work on bills focusing on education, clean energy, binational issues, and more. As we proceed through the legislative session, please continue to send us your opinions, so that we can better serve our district and help improve your way of life.

March is Women's History Month and I couldn't help but highlight Dolores Huerta, whom, in her late 80s, continues to advocate for the underserved, women, and children. She founded the Dolores Huerta Foundation and continues to travel around the country promoting policies and actions to help the working class.

As always, if you have any questions or need assistance with a state matter, please do not hesitate to contact my staff.

Sincerely,

Ben Hueso
State Senator
40th District

IN THE KNOW ...

Guaranteed Income Project

In March, 150 families were the recipients of San Diego's First Guaranteed Income Pilot Project. These families received funds they can spend, save, or invest as they see fit. I proudly supported the project, which helps families with new economic and social opportunities. It also continues to strengthen the collaboration between non-profit organizations and government colleagues to strengthen our ties with our community. This pilot program is set to run for the next two years. Find more information regarding the program here.

Rent Relief Deadline Extended

On March 29, the Senate Judiciary Committee passed AB 2179 which extends portions of the COVID-19 Rental Housing Recovery Act to provide court eviction protections to tenants with a pending rental assistance application by March 31 until June 30. The extension will provide eviction protections for anyone who has a pending application by March 31.

  • If you still need to apply for rental assistance, it's not too late. You have less than 48 hours. Go to www.housingiskey.com

"Then There's California" Podcast

I recently sat with "Then There's California" to talk about my long-time passion for public policy, love for music and more. Listen to the podcast here.

Fentanyl Roundtable

This month, I met with San Diego County elected officials, state policymakers, and U.S. law enforcement leaders to address the growing fentanyl crisis in San Diego County. In 2021, fentanyl overdose deaths exceeded 700. Fentanyl has increased fatal overdoses among our teenagers, growing by nearly six times from 2015 to 2020. During this two-hour roundtable, we shared ideas and information on how to fight the fentanyl crisis.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT ...

Nonprofit of the Month: Mama's Kitchen

Mama's Kitchen is a community-driven nonprofit organization that has been serving the San Diego community for more than 31 years. Mama's Kitchen believes that everyone is entitled to the basic necessity of life – nutritious food. The organization provides nutrition support to San Diego residents at risk of malnutrition due to critical illness such as HIV, cancer, congestive heart failure, type 2 diabetes, and chronic kidney disease. Together with hundreds of volunteers, businesses, and community supporters, the organization helps thousands of at-risk individuals and families stay healthy, preserve their dignity, and keep their families together by providing, medically tailored home-delivered meals, along with pantry services and nutrition education – all at no cost.

Citizen of the Month: Jacques-Andre Istel

Jacques-Andre Istel founded the town of Felicity in California, named after his wife, Felicia. In the town, he started The Museum of History in Granite and this year added the Oceans monument. The museum has 18 granite monuments, cementing humanity's history on Earth. Mr. Istel served in the U.S. Marines during the Korean War and earned the rank of Lt. Colonel. He also donated the land where the California Highway Patrol Winterhaven office was constructed, for which I and the community are very grateful.
