Senator Ben Hueso
March 2015 Newsletter

Dear Neighbor,

I'm pleased to announce that I have officially introduced our bills for the 2015 legislative season. This year, I introduced a strong and ambitious package that centers on consumer protection, public safety open government and helping small businesses. I'm particularly proud to author a bill that will require new buildings to have automated external defibrillators, which have been proven to save the lives of cardiac arrest patients. I've also introduced bills related to safe housing, safe drinking water, and protecting victim's rights during in pro per trials.

My bills also reflect government transparency by strengthening voting rights in local elections, making government audits available to the public, and regulating the ex parte communication of utility decision makers. Lastly, they represent an economic push toward continuing to create jobs in the state by providing small business more access to loans and capital.

I look forward to working on your behalf in the legislature. As always please feel free to contact my office with any questions you may have.

Women of the Year

March is National Women's History Month. In celebration of this month, I will be honoring Marcela Valladolid, Chef, Author and Entrepreneur as the 2015 Woman of the Year from our district. In addition, I will be presenting five "Outstanding Women Honoree Awards" in the areas of education, the environment, civic engagement, health and an in memoriam award for outstanding lifetime service. The awardees are as follows: (1) Chris Brown, Board President, South Bay Union School District; (2) Fay Crevoshay, San Diego Wildcoast; (3) Maria Garcia, Historian; (4) Ana Melgoza, San Ysidro Health Center; and (5) Gloria Johnson, Former Civil Rights and LGBT activist.

These awards allow me to thank each of these women who have inspired us through their selfless commitment and dedication to their community. Join me in paying tribute to the many women whose determination to make change has proved to be instrumental in our lives and our community.

Senator Hueso and Wells Fargo Present $50,000 to the Neighborhood House of Calexico and $15,000 to the Center for Employment Training

Women of the Year

Last month, I had the honor of awarding Wells Fargo's Economic Opportunity Grants to The Neighborhood House of Calexico and the Center for Employment Training. These grants were awarded to individuals and small businesses that reinforce the efforts of creating jobs in the community.

Neighborhood House of Calexico was awarded $50,000 for the development of a mobile computer lab to provide education and assist in job placement training. Additionally, they will utilize the grant money to support the development of comprehensive assistance programs. The Center for Employment Training was awarded $15,000 for job training and placement assistance.

I will continue to support organizations that promote job creation and provide individuals with resources necessary to become self-sufficient. I thank Wells Fargo for providing the grants to these two community organizations.

Senator Hueso Commends Christopher Gomez Wong for Establishing Farmer's Market in Calexico

Women of the Year

In June of 2013, Christopher Gomez Wong presented the idea of a local Farmers Market to the City of Calexico and subsequently partnered with the City to establish it. With his volunteer work, he helps with preparations for market days, including: recruiting vendors, inviting performers, reaching out to farmers for donations of produce, recruiting volunteers, transportation of produce, and a myriad of other things, in preparation for a successful event.

Chris has an ideology about preserving the Earth in how the community leads life, and he truly lives it! He promotes a healthy lifestyle by educating the community on how to grow their own crops, using natural ingredients in foods, and helping youth learn the importance of the lifestyle. Through Chris' dedication market days in the City of Calexico have doubled this year. He is always ready to help, willing to lead, and excited about giving others the opportunity to learn about sustainable living, healthy eating, and helping to save the environment.

Hueso Introduces Bill to Establish Expert Committee to Advise on Clean Energy and Greenhouse Gas-Related Policies

State Senator Ben Hueso introduced a bill that calls for the creation of the Committee on Maximizing Jobs and Economic Development. The Committee would advise state agencies on the most effective way to implement clean energy policies while creating more employment opportunities across the state. Senate Bill 189 ensures that jobs and economic development remain the focal point as California paves the way for global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Senator Hueso added, "Senate Bill 189 will tap into California's leading innovators to assist in creating jobs through environmental stewardship. We will develop a model that will benefit Californians and future generations."

The proposed law is part of the California Climate Leadership bill package. The climate leadership package is intended to look beyond California's 2020 greenhouse gas reduction goals and prepare the state for continued economic prosperity.
